Approach to Teaching

"I am a recent maths graduate from Exeter University. I am highly sociable and have a passion for expressing ideas. I am looking to supplement my part-time income in order to focus on other areas of interest including music and writing. Curiosity is often penalised when studying mathematics as convergent marking criteria demands high efficiency in answering questions leaving less time for pupils to comprehend or ask questions. I have always endeavoured to retain my curiosity for mathematical problems throughout my degree given my tendency to look at things from multiple perspectives and to continuously ask questions. My abilities derive from passion and determination, as well as navigating the learning process from what I consider to be a highly self-taught/motivated approach relative to the backgrounds of my university peers, given the poor reputation of my secondary school and joint sixth form college’s maths departments for which essential further maths wasn’t taught and my top set maths class mutinied against the teacher for ridiculously poor standards of teaching. I therefore believe the creative strengths I have built towards lateral thinking in teaching myself mathematics, would direct my ability to teach others in a very positive manner and offer a fresh and relevant vibe to the community of teachers in terms of local maths tuition."
