Approach to Teaching

"I am head of the UK Earth system modelling project, based at the UK Meteorological Office in Exeter, Devon. I am also a Professor in the School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds (even though I live in Exeter) I have worked in both universities and research institutes, in the UK, Canada, USA and Sweden, developing climate and Earth system models for predicting global climate change. These models are based on the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics and physics, chemistry and biology. I am a strong advocate of the practical application of applied mathematics, combined with advanced science knowledge to develop methods and models that can help us understand the Earth's climate system and make reliable predictions of the future state of the global climate. I have a strong background in applied mathematics, physics and geophysical sciences and am keen to help students develop their maths abilities and realise their potential in using these talents to develop methods to help society better prepare for and mitigate global climate change. I am also keen to inform students about the great potential for using applied maths and physics in careers at the Met Office and in meteorology, oceanography and climate science generally. I enjoy teaching and have mainly taught university students in the past 15 years."
