Approach to Teaching

"Emma is a PhD candidate in French Studies at the University of Birmingham. Her research looks at the experience of women and psychiatry through first person writing in both the English and Francophone context. She completed her B.A. (Hons) in French and European History in 2012 and her Masters in Cultural Inquiry based in Modern Languages in 2013. Emma lived in Paris, France for one year during which time she taught English Language in several primary schools and privately tutored several students in English on the side. In school she was responsible for several classes of students with ages ranging from seven to thirteen. The focus of the classes was vocabulary building, sentence construction, basic grammar and conversation practice. The private students were also ESL, but at higher level with focus on the aforementioned learning but additionally writing and reading. She has privately taught French for the past four years to many students, from exam preparation for GCSE, to child learners, to adult beginners and French for business. With all French students the focus is on the four keys skills of language learning (reading, writing, speaking and listening). In 2013 she was appointed to the position of teaching fellow (lecturer) at the University of Birmingham in the school of philosophy, theology and religion teaching a course called `The European Heritage` The module consists of four key components, history, theology, philosophy and literature. Emma has taught a variety of topics from these components from the ancient Greek literature of Oedipus the King, ancient Greek religion, Medieval history, Shakespeare, European literature (Goethe`s Faust) to Fascism, the Second World War and the holocaust and also the modernist literature of Virginia Woolf."
