Approach to Teaching

"I am a PhD student at University College London and a Cambridge Maths graduate. I have been tutoring Mathematics across London for 5 years. I worked for 2 years as a youth worker in South London and currently teach seminars in Political and Moral Philosophy at University College London. I have a great love of teaching and believe that many students underestimate their own potential, particularly in Maths. I only tutor subjects in which I have degrees - Mathematics and Philosophy. I have tutored Maths across London for 5 years, from the ages of 8 to 20. I have specialised in students undertaking GCSE and A-level Maths, helping struggling students to attain a C-grade and others to attain A*s and As. I have tutored approximately 50 different students from a wide range of backgrounds so have a good awareness of different educational needs and learning styles. I believe many students perform badly in Maths through a lack of confidence. I aim to build this confidence by focusing on key skills and areas in order to build a sound basis from which students can further develop. If working towards an exam, I identify key exam topics which students can rapidly build ability in, such as fractions, percentages and algebra. Focusing on these key exam topics can help students to rapidly improve their results. I am able to build a good relationship with each student in order to provide friendly, enjoyable tutoring sessions in which students are stretched and inspired to achieve their full potential. "
