Approach to Teaching

"I am a FE Functional Skills maths tutor very interested in getting experience in teaching Academic Maths, but also welcoming teaching Physics. I am a passionate, creative and caring individual. I am really interested in getting the best of my passion and creativity to develop the relevancy of the teaching of maths. Working with teenagers, I was always looking for strategies to motivate them, by making the subject more relevant and playful, stimulating their self-discovery skills and their wish to feel more confident. I also like to develop their mental arithmetic skills, what constitutes an extra motivation factor for them. Returning to the basic concepts and developing my teaching in Numeracy for adults learners in a mainly connectionist way has been a most satisfactory experience. I have been able to support the change in the attitude of learners with maths anxiety instilling confidence that they will go on to further their studies and receive positive results. The learners confide in me as part of my pastoral role and appreciate the friendly supportive atmosphere of collaboration that my own caring and easy-going character and sense of humour convey. They feel supported and thankful of my patience and capacity to explain in different ways until they understand. I have been encouraged by my own students and other colleagues to teach Academic maths due to my mastery of the subject, my personality (that they think could be very welcomed by teenagers) and capacity to teach maths in a reasoning way and not as an ensemble of rules to memorize."
