Approach to Teaching

"I live in Tilehurst, near Reading, Berkshire with my two teenage daughters. I was born and bred in London, and moved to Berkshire in 1988. If the truth be known, I would move back to London tomorrow, but thats unlikely to happen at this stage in my life! I have a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Reading, having graduated as a mature student in 1999. I have been tutoring mathematics on an informal basis since 2008, but I have been involved in training and tutoring since 2003. I have taught at every level, from teaching mathematics to young offenders in Reading Young Offenders Institution to training High Court Judges on bespoke computer systems whilst working with the Ministry of Justice. I have a passion for mathematics which I try instil in my students, to raise their enjoyment of the subject and thereby raise their confidence and grades. Mathematics is not inherently difficult if built on solid foundations, but often there are gaps in a students knowledge of the subject that leads to confusion in later stages. This confusion leads to lack of confidence and ultimately indifference. Schools, unfortunately, do not have the time or the resources to identify and fill those gaps, but a tutor does, and this is what I aim to do. Confidence in mathematics requires practice, and lots of it, so as well as identifying those gaps I set regular weekly practice exercises, often based on previous examination questions. I expect the student to complete the exercises before the following weeks session, at which time we go through the practice paper together to ensure that the exercises have been fully understood. Should the student have any questions on exercises I have set, I am always available on my mobile, or via text or email, to answer those questions and to provide further help if necessary (at no extra cost of course!). I find this works well, and gives the student added confidence knowing that I am available to help at any time."

Testimonials

Doug has provided us with these testimonials:
From Bertie (5/5): (Casual Learner Maths) Very helpful tutor, easy to work with and has a very unique teaching style, massively improved my maths skills within 1 hour of learning with Doug. Would highly recommend to anyone who is struggling with maths. He also puts in his own hours outside of your tuition to tailor questions and exam papers to help you practice.
