Approach to Teaching

"Matt studied at the University of Keele for his Business Management and Marketing degree. He is an experienced Maths tutor and classroom teacher, with a thorough understanding of both the subject and the syllabus, but also the different needs and challenges across a full class range of pupils, including the most able. When taking on a new student he seeks to establish their understanding of underlying maths concepts, as well as their current achievement level. Matt prepares thoroughly for each session, is a diligent teacher with the ability to relate and communicate with students at their level. He exudes enthusiasm and takes a simple joy in working with students and seeing them succeed. Students invariably enjoy his tutoring sessions and look forward to them. Educated at a top UK public boarding school, he is a confident and patient mentor with a passion for numbers and a gift for inspiring and motivating children, including those with learning and relationship difficulties. His tutoring and teaching work spans over ten years, from 5 year olds to graduates. His experience includes in-school extra-curricular tutoring, home schooling, classroom teaching (ages 7-13), and online tutoring. He currently provides free tutoring to disadvantaged children through a London charity, and has been an SEN school assistant who has worked with all ends of the ability spectrum. He enjoys tutoring. Outside work Matt enjoys living in Chelsea and getting involved in the community. He is a fan of live music concerts and sports, and is a season ticket holder at Chelsea FC."

Testimonials

Matt has provided us with these testimonials:
Case Study and Testimonial From a mother: " My son Toby is an active and fun loving 11 year old who struggles with concentration and who, at times, can be disruptive in class. Toby hates maths - or used to -and I thought he had the same "math phobia" as me. My mind goes went blank when Im faced with a spreadsheet of numbers. I had tried two home tutors, both retired maths teachers, both without success. In our first session Matt recognised Toby was a bright boy, but suspected he had never acquired the basic number skills to progress in maths. Matt started out talking about what a number line was, which Toby had never been taught, and how the ancient Egyptians (a subject Toby was fascinated in after visiting the Tutankhamen exhibition) used it for designing the pyramids. Suddenly, Toby was interested in maths! Matt finished the first lesson by playing a short game of darts, and that became how he finished each lesson. Each time he would give Toby a number, and ask him what three numbers did he have to throw to win with three darts. After 2 months Toby had super mental arithmetic skills, and his work in maths in school had improved significantly. I still invite Matt to Tobys birthday party, though we no longer require his maths tuition. I believe Matts success with kids is that he knows how to relate to them on their level, and he makes the tutoring lessons fun. I will always be grateful to Matt, not only for helping Toby, but that in the process he helped me overcome my own number phobia!”
I first used Matt to tutor my daughter Lucy in preparation for sitting the 11+ exam prior to her entry to Francis Holland school in London. Lucy gets nervous in exam situations. Matt was great in improving Lucys confidence to the point she was actually looking forward to the exam, which Im pleased to say she passed. I now use Matt with my 8 year old boy, as well as for occasional booster sessions with Lucy. Matt is invariably smiling, is very thorough and professional, is arrives on time and well prepared, which is a refreshing change from previous tutors i have tried. I highly recommend him.
