Approach to Teaching
"I am a (male) private tutor with a degree in mathematics and 20 years of experience of providing excellent tuition services. I provide students with lessons tailored to their individual learning styles and to suit their specific needs, whether that be a thorough understanding of background knowledge, help with subject areas and topics they find particularly difficult, or last-minute exam tips. I will discuss with each student their personal learning goals and preferred approach, and adapt my teaching to suit, thus ensuring that each student gets quality teaching focused on their requirements and preferences. I strongly believe that everyone can learn to be confident in mathematics - if a student is struggling then that is the fault of the teacher, not the student. I am passionate about mathematics and I love to teach - we work hard in lessons, but we have fun as well. I have also been trained in counselling skills, so students can be confident of an understanding and sympathetic teacher. I teach at all levels, from Primary to A-level to first-year degree or adult numeracy. All are welcome. I have coached many students of all ages, feedback has been enthusiastic, and I am very happy to have been of help to so many students. I prefer to teach in a dedicated area in my own home as we can then be sure of a quiet and comfortable working environment, with a wealth of resources readily to hand. I have worked in high school and for the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust; I currently work part-time in Student Support Services at the University of Leeds and I work for OCR marking maths A-level exams. I strive to provide a friendly and welcoming environment where you will receive sympathetic and understanding guidance, whatever your ability level."Hourly Charges

Lessons are charged on a sliding scale to be agreed based upon the student's ability to pay. The price given above is only a guide. Please get in touch via this website for more details. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice are charged at half the session rate.Discounts
The first introductory lesson is always free. Lessons of more than one hour, or multiple lessons for the same family within a week, may be eligible for a discount. A discount is also available if you pay by monthly standing order.Availability

| John is an excellent tutor. He has a very friendly and relaxed personality and is fantastic at explaining concepts in multiple ways. He knows exactly what he is talking about and always prepares great content for each session. He has also been very accomodating for when I have had trouble making it to the session and has been willing and able to do sessions effectively over skype/scribblar when required. From teaching me new content that I have never covered to helping me go through past papers, John excelled in all areas. In particular he introduced me to reading examiners comments on the past papers so you can see what the common mistakes people tend to make are.
