Approach to Teaching

"I am an experienced freelance maths tutor. I have also taught the subject in schools and at an FE college. I teach GCSE and BTEC Levels 1 to 4. With regard to my maths teaching methodology, I believe calculators have their place but it's also important that students fully develop their skills in mental & paper arithmetic, estimating, and basic algebra as these form a solid foundation for studying higher mathematical topics. This also gives students more confidence and understanding when facing exams. I know this strategy works as all of my students so far have exceeded their predicted exam grades. I can offer parental references to prove this. With advent of the new GCSE specifications, I encourage my students, wherever possible, to improve their problem-solving skills with mathematics. As part of my teaching I also use IT tools like spreadsheets and graphing software, where appropriate, so that topics are more visual and interactive. I also have experience of teaching dyslexic students. I devise strategies to help them practise their number skills more efficiently and breakdown mathematical processes into smaller parts that can be practised individually first before putting them all together. Please note that I am only available during the week, although I will, if needed, work weekends for a short period of time i.e. a maximum of 4 weeks continuous."
