Approach to Teaching

"A successful class teacher for over 30 years, I taught the full Primary Curriculum in schools in and around the Rotherham area. More recently I am working as a One to One Mathematics Tutor at Outwood Academy City in Sheffield where I am supporting individuals and small groups of Year 11 students working towards their Maths GCSEs, Foundation Level. I also teach individual children privately and am presently tutoring pupils working at both Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, the former in Year 6 preparing for SATS. I have a good knowledge of the new Maths Curriculums and am currently attending a one year Teacher Subject Specialist Training Course in Mathematics at Adwick in Doncaster. I have always been a strong supporter of one to one tuition and, in the past I owned a franchise to promote this ideal throughout the South Yorkshire region. The benefits to pupils being taught in this way are substantial as the learning objectives and teaching are targeted to the individual pupil's level, formative assessment can be done easily and effectively, as can the monitoring of the individual's progress. As a result of this, children make accelerated progress and are able to 'catch up' more quickly and efficiently. The other main advantage is that children who feel inhibited and less confident in a whole class situation gain self-confidence without the distraction and seeming intimidation of their peers. Teaching in this way is definitely a positive move forward and I always relish the opportunity, with the one to one skills I possess. Whilst working at Outwood Academy City as a One to One Tutor in Mathematics I have had great success with the individuals I have worked with, helping to motivate and accelerate their progress, as well as providing them with confidence. Last academic year many of the students I tutored made three or four grades progress in their final GCSE year.
