Approach to Teaching

"I am a tutor based in North Petherton with a BSc in Mathematics at The Open University. Studying for my degree with the OU was a brilliant experience as it allowed me to work and to learn and meet lots of people from different backgrounds. It is primarily distance learning so one is often studying alone or in a small group and it really gives you an insight into others' and your own learning techniques. Maths has been a passion of mine since studying it at school, I enjoy teaching and hopefully helping others to appreciate the subject. I have been tutoring for 4 years with great results. Typically after being contacted I will arrange a free consultation with a student and their parent/guardian to discuss aims and where the student is in their studies. Lessons are then arranged at a convenient time and frequency for the students needs It is my aim to aid the student to really understand the key concepts in their modules. Learning and memorising on it's own isn't enough to achieve top grades and the student's best potential. Building on that understanding will allow the student to learn more efficiently in future studies in Maths and consistently achieve well. Closer to exam time it is important to review past papers and teach the student how to perform best in an exam. This will involve learning how to interpret the questions correctly and know what an examiner is looking for. This is an area that even capable students can lose important marks. Exam technique in itself is an important part of learning, and learning to write Mathematics correctly is an invaluable skill that is essential to performing well at their current level and above, should the student wish to study further (A level or University). My tailored tutoring programme is designed to incorporate these techniques to ensure my students achieve the very best of their potential."
